17 DAYS OF SPIRITUAL WISDOM

The true spirit of Christmas

The true spirit of Christmas

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

To help nourish the soul during this festive season, we have selected the following inspiring extracts from the balanced wisdom of Dr George King – talking about how to make the very best of this holy time.

… I do hope that you do have a happy time. I do hope that some of you let your hair down, that you do recuperate some of the strength that you may have expended in this past year, and I hope most sincerely that this strength does come to you so that you are better prepared for the times to come.

– From an Address given on December 24th 1967, entitled “Have a Balanced Calculated Approach During This Time”

It’s a very great shame that the spirit of Christmas can’t last; not the commercialism of Christmas, not so much the giving of presents, but the spirit behind this, which is the most important thing.

It could last of course, if man would allow it to. Somewhere down the line, someone has to make a start along this direction.

Those of you here this morning, and those that will hear this tape throughout the world may think, “We are very few and how can we make any kind of a start, and if we do, will it be any good?”

The answer is most definitely “yes”. Even if one person makes a start this will be good.

Now, I’m not for one moment saying that some of you don’t do this. I feel most strongly that you do. I feel that you are the same after Christmas as you were during Christmas. Environment around you has changed, but you haven’t.

What I should have said, I suppose, if even one more person allows the same light, which flows out from them during this time of the year — allows that to flow throughout the year — then that person has made a stride forward, not only for himself, but more important still, much more important still, for the mass of humanity.

And if those people who do allow their light, shall we call it, to shine throughout the year, if those allow even a little more light to shine from them throughout the year, they too have made a great step forward, not only for themselves, but for humanity.

– From an Address given on December 21st 1969, entitled “Keep The Christmas Spirit All Year Long”

Funny thing you know, I remember some time ago going to a very materialistic kind of a party in England … I could see that they were intelligent people, and they were out to have a good time.

I had a strange feeling come over me at that particular time and decided that, although I was there, not to become part of it.

So I sat down in padmasana in the corner of the room.

It wasn’t long before all the girls stopped dancing, sat around the floor and started to talk about Yoga.

Of course, I wasn’t very popular with the men.

And they were really asking intelligent questions about Yoga. And when I started to be rather flippant and making wise cracks, a few of them took me to task for not being serious about this subject.

When I found what ground I was on, I could get serious about it.

I left that particular party thinking: “Well, at least if I haven’t done anything else, I have spread some thoughts; I have given people something to think about.”

I think this should be done by everyone.

I think people, if they’re real Christians, should regard themselves as ambassadors. People who are not wet blankets and spoilsports — not that kind of a person at all — but a person who will, in the right manner, at the right time, remind party-goers to keep Christ in Christmas, and I think it can be done.

And I think if enough people do this … then the true spirit of Christmas will come back again.

At the moment it’s been throttled by this tremendous materialistic surge, which is cashing in on this particular holy time. For even though — and I repeat, Christmas is not the true birth date — it is, nevertheless, a holy time.

So therefore, let us be a little braver this Christmas than some of us were last Christmas, and remember why we are celebrating, even if it’s only for a short time, and then go ahead with our celebrations.

You never know just what you do when you do things like this; you never know. Probably, you might be the means of bringing a great deal of help — spiritual help — to someone at that particular function, you never know.

… Once, a person I respect greatly said to me that God will put into the mouths of others what He wants you to learn, and it is so. It is absolutely true …

… So, let’s keep Christ, the true spirit, in Christmas — the spirit of devotion, sacrifice, kindness.

– From an Address given on December 20th 1964, entitled “Keep Christ in Christmas”

… It is also amazing what power a man can have; what tremendous strides a man can take. How a man can — if he wants to — really evolve into something great, something wonderful, something shining, something glorious; within even the worst terrestrial man there is the God-Seed, which can be cultivated into magnificence which defies description.

In our resolutions we should remember this — we should remember our potential.

… Even though Jesus came and he died, thereby making his mission successful, by the way — he was not a failure that the so-called Christians make him to be — in my terminology, in my knowledge, he was a complete success — a Master of this caliber does not fail — even though this happened, and even though a catastrophe was stopped so that mankind might have greater experience — and you people in this room, and you people all over the world listening to this tape recording, have already had two thousand years more experience because of the karma taken by Jesus, which, in case some people get it wrong, does not forgive you your sins or any such nonsense as that of course — even though this happened, how many times since has intervention been brought about on your behalf?

In your present lifetime and mine, intervention has been brought about quite a few times, never mind in the intervening period, between the death of Jesus and let us say 40 years ago.

At the moment, as you sit here, intervention is being brought about on behalf of terrestrial man; it has to be, because your karma, your karmic pattern needs it.

I’m talking now not about the karmic pattern of the enlightened individual so much as the karmic pattern of the whole — putting all man together, he has a group soul, and that group soul has a certain karmic pattern …

… I think that we have to, sooner or later, examine ourselves to be prepared to get the true message of Christmas. Make it a time of celebration, but a time of very definite, very strong resolve that we — doesn’t matter whether there are 20, 50, or 200 of us … however — we are going to stand on our own feet to such an extent that if another Jesus comes to Earth to have to take on himself karma, if it happens, then at least he will not have to take on himself ‘my karma’.

And I think if you put this thought into Christmas I think that you can, this morning, advance a thousand years if you do it in the right manner.

If you don’t do it, I think you can just stand still, and this is where the freedom of choice of man comes in.

– From an Address given on December 26th 1965, entitled “Put Your Own House In Order”

During this Christmas time my friends, do have a really good time, do really enjoy yourself.

There is nothing wrong in this at all.

In fact, I think it would be more wrong for you not to do this.

Do have a joyful time, but remember your values …

… Not the things which will pass in a day, but the real values by which a man and woman are measured; the anvil upon which the soul is formed.

– From an Address given on December 13th 1964, entitled “Remember Your Values At Christmas Time”

So Ladies and Gentlemen, may I take this opportunity of wishing you all a very, very joyous New Year, and may it be filled to the brim with spiritual accomplishments. And I’m sure that is what most of you would wish yourselves, and I do so in all earnestness.
